CBAM
Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism
The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is a policy established by the European Union to impose a carbon cost on imports, mitigating “carbon leakage”—where production shifts to countries with less stringent climate policies, increasing global emissions. Under CBAM, importers of select goods to the EU must account for the greenhouse gas emissions embedded in their products and pay corresponding fees if these emissions exceed EU benchmarks. By aligning imported products with the EU’s robust environmental standards, CBAM fosters a more competitive, sustainable market, encourages global adoption of low-carbon practices, and strengthens the EU’s climate leadership in reducing industrial emissions.
